This week we’re studying “Yom Kippur” also called “The The Day of Atonement.” If you would like to pick up a copy of this book or the study guide, click here to go to Amazon (affil link).

If you’re following along with us, you should be reading chapter six of The Beauty of Jesus Revealed in the Feasts, and filling out your study guide. The study guide is designed to help you remember what you learn in each chapter and to dig a little deeper as you do.

Perhaps you could write down the scriptures you find in each chapter or highlight them right there in your book. This way, once you’re finished the chapter, you can look up these verses in your Bible to study them within the context of the Word.

Want to chat about the chapter? Join me on Friday afternoons on Facebook where I’ll post my answers to the study questions and open up a thread for your thoughts too.

Pastor Daniel Krebs (Trulife Ministries) and I have put together seven videos for you–one for each chapter. Each one is about 45 minutes to an hour long. Tune in every week as we’ll be your study buddies throughout this series.

Since the destruction of the temple in 70 AD, this annual ceremony can no longer be performed by the high priest. There is no temple, and therefore there is no ceremony for Yom Kippur. So what is God doing here? Either He’s taken away the ability to atone for the sins of the people, or He’s provided a much better sacrifice that atoned for our sin once and for all.

Hebrews 10:9 teaches us that Jesus became the perfect sacrifice that atoned for our sins once and for all.

Then he said, “Here I am, I have come to do your will.” He sets aside the first to establish the second. And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, and since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool. For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy. (Hebrews 10:9-14)

The moment that Jesus gave up His spirit, the Bible tells us that the curtain in the temple was torn in two from the top to the bottom. The length, the width, and the thickness of this veil make this a momentous event. God was showing us right there and then that the law was fulfilled. That very moment that our sin was atoned for, the partition dividing God from mankind was removed.
