As I’m reading Acts, I stop at chapter 3 where Peter and John are going up to the temple for the hour of prayer.

As they’re walking by, they noticed a lame man begging for alms at the temple gate. Perhaps they had seen this man daily, but on this particular day he caught their eye and asked them for money.

Here’s the part that got my attention, “Silver and gold have I none,” Peter said, reaching out his hand to the man, “but such as I have give I thee. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk.”

As I read those words, I thought of my own life. How money’s been tight during this world-wide pandemic, and how many of us have lost the ability to give in the way that we used to.

More so than that, I was struck by the words, “but such as I have give I thee.” What they gave him that day was so much better than what he was hoping to get. And so, I got to thinking, what do I have to offer? If not gold and silver, then what can I give?

I was reminded of effort and time, compassion and care. I was reminded of good works and ministry, passion and prayer. I was reminded of the widow’s offering in Matthew chapter 12, and how she richly gave with the few pennies she had.

And finally I was reminded of Paul who said,

As sorrowful, yet alway rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things. (2 Corinthians 6:10, KJV)

And so my friend, I want to remind you today to never stop giving regardless of how much or how little you have. Give from the heart, not from the head. Don’t focus on how you can’t give, trust God for the increase and give in the many ways that you can.

Planting Hope

Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you. (Luke 6:38, KJV)
