Loving our neighbors is more important than going to church and warming a pew if we’re leaving that church unaffected. I’m not telling you not to go to church, I’m just saying that we must be willing to put God’s love into action and to be the church outside of those walls.
Casting Crowns said it well when they sang, “We are the body of Christ, but if we are the body why aren’t His arms reaching?”
There’s a verse in the Old Testament that’s repeated throughout the Bible, which says, “To do righteousness and justice is more desirable to the LORD than sacrifice.” (Proverbs 21:3, NIV)
I imagine believers back then were bringing their sacrifices to the temple to be burned by the priest, but then leaving the temple unchanged. We saw this illustrated in the story of the Good Samaritan when both a priest and a Levite passed by a man without extending him mercy.
I’m sure we’ve all missed opportunities to be His hands in this world, and to love as He called us to love. When I think about that, I’m reminded of my dad, who taught me to love as God loved, but also taught me to lean on God’s merciful grace.
“God isn’t concerned about what you did yesterday.” He’d say, “He wants to know what you’ll do today.”

Look for opportunities to be the church outside the walls. Keep your eyes open today to see if and where God might want to use you.
To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices. (Mark 12:33, NIV)
