Concluding Thoughts on Chapter 2

Do you ever have one of those days when you feel like the weight of the world is too heavy to bear? I had a summer like that. Michael was diagnosed with cancer, and we were dealing with numerous issues regarding his health.

I had been without my car all summer, and after incurring a substantial cost for a new engine, it was finally ready for pick up. Three hours later, however, I was stranded on the side of the highway waiting for a tow truck to take the car back.

I don’t cry all that often, but that day I did. I cried, and I prayed, and while I waited two hours for Michael to rescue me from the heat, I was reminded of this promise from God:

‘Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.’ (Isaiah 41:10, NIV)

Again and again, we’re reminded in scripture that we’re not alone in our struggles. He’s not only with us, He’s promised to give us the strength and the help that we need to get through whatever it is that we’re facing. And the image of Him holding us up with His righteous right hand? It’s yet another reminder of His unfailing protection and care.

The Bible says that faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God, and as I’m going through this study I can clearly see why. His Word is the very thing that we lean on for courage and strength. His promises sustain us when nothing else can, because we know He’s as faithful today as He always has been.

Discussion

Let’s talk about how our study is going in the comment section below. I’d love to hear your thoughts, and if you’re comfortable sharing your heart with us, maybe we can discuss this question together:

Can you think of a trial you’ve gone through that strengthened your faith? How did you feel at the beginning, were you afraid? How do you feel about it now? Click here to go to the comments.

Questions and Answers from Chapter 2

What promise were the Israelites given in Deuteronomy 9:3 as they were about to cross the Jordan River?

That the Lord was going ahead of them to destroy the enemy, and that the Israelites would drive out the enemy quickly.

What promise do we find in Hebrews 13:5?

That He will never leave us or forsake us.

Looking at Numbers Chapter 13, list three things that intimidated the spies.

1. The people were powerful

2. The city was fortified

3.  They saw giants (descendants of Anak) there

They were especially afraid of the Anakites. Why? (See Deuteronomy 9:2)

The Anakites were strong and tall. They were rumored to be powerful.

Can you think of a trial you’ve gone through that strengthened your faith? How did you feel at the beginning, were you afraid? How do you feel about it now?

This answer will be different for everyone.

Look up Hebrews 13:6, to finish this sentence. For God has said: Never will I leave you, never will I forsake you. So, we say with confidence:

The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?

What does 2 Timothy 1:7 tell us about the Spirit inside us?

The Spirit does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.

What did Joseph say about his struggles in Genesis 50:20? Write the verse out here:

“You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.”
