Roots give us the foundation we need to stand strong. Joyful in both good times and bad. Loving and gentle with difficult people. Having a peace that passes all understanding when the bottom falls out. The faithful ones are grounded by roots that run deep.

The Bible tells us,

They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit. (Jeremiah 17:8, NIV)

Trials have a way of proving our faith. The Bible says that suffering produces perseverance, and perseverance character. What it’s really saying there is that perseverance proves the validity of our character. We’re either plucked out of the ground, or we dig deep into the soil of our faith.

It’s easy to say that we trust God, but will we trust Him when we’re tested and tried? We can say that we love God, but will we still love Him when things don’t go our way?

Job was a man who feared God and shunned evil. He had everything a man could possibly want, but the most important thing about Job is that he was truly faithful to God.

In Chapter 1, we see one trial after another. In one horrific swoop, he loses his servants, his live stock, and finally his children. And what does Job do? He falls to the ground and he worships.

What does that tell us about Job’s character? It tells us that he was a man who was well rooted in faith. When the bottom fell out, we saw how blameless and pure that faith was. Job didn’t just act like a believer, he was a believer through and through.

Job thus described himself this way, “My root was spread out by the waters, and the dew lay all night upon my branch.” (Job 29:19, KJV)
