Today’s Devotional – The Power to Open Doors and Soften Hearts

I got to talking to my son this week about his future. He mentioned how he’s feeling lost. That he’s hit a point in his job where he feels like he’s stuck. Where does he go next? And, will he be able to move forward if and when he has a plan?

I think we all have that feeling of uncertainty from time to time. Wondering what we’ll do next. Wondering where God will lead. Wondering how things could possibly change when all we’ve been given are the two hands that we’ve got. Longing to succeed, yet not having the power to do so.

And then I open my Bible to Nehemiah, where I find a man with nothing but a passion and prayer. A man whose passion for change ran so deep that he wept and mourned and fasted for days.

The Bible tells us that he was a cupbearer to the King. He wasn’t a king himself, he wasn’t the captain of a large army, he didn’t have the necessary resources at his disposal to rebuild Jerusalem, but he had faith in a God Who moves mountains.

Because of the gracious hand of God, Nehemiah found favor with the king and was given everything he needed to start rebuilding Jerusalem’s walls.

I think sometimes we forget that the same God who hung the moon and the stars in the sky is able to not only meet our needs but do exceedingly abundantly more than we ask or think. We tend to forget that the same God who created man has the power to open doors at a moments notice and soften hearts.

And so, as Nehemiah, we trust in a God who is able, not for the means of financial gain, but that by His gracious and compassionate hand, we might fulfill our God-given purpose.

Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us. Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen. (Ephesians 3:21-22, KJV)
