Reading 2 Kings Chapter 5, we’re introduced to Naaman, a commander of the army and a valiant soldier. We don’t see this too often in scripture–a man of his stature plagued with leprosy, and so it was interesting to read this man’s story and his journey through faith.

Following the advice of a young servant girl, Naaman packed up his silver and gold and went down to Israel to be healed by the prophet Elisha.

He had great expectations, as I’m sure most of us would. Naaman was expecting to see Elisha, expecting to speak to Elisha, and perhaps expecting a miraculous event to take place right then and there. However, none of those expectations were met. Elisha simply sent a message instructing Naaman to wash himself seven times in the Jordan River.

Naaman was angry. Why? Because the simplicity in all of this didn’t make sense. Believers like to complicate things sometimes, don’t we? We want the heavens to open up, and God’s hand to reach down. But here’s the thing–if we’re too busy looking for God in the ways we expect Him to be, we’ll miss out on the God that He is.

As you’re reading this story, keep in mind the fact that when we see leprosy in the Bible, it usually represents sin. With that in mind, we see a parallel here to a sinner asking, “What must I do to be saved?”

The gospel’s straightforward–the message quite simple, but it doesn’t make sense to the world.

Naaman got the message, but it didn’t make sense. It never will, as long as we’re leaning on our wisdom alone. And so, it is with those who open the gospel, it’s foolishness to some, but everything to those who put their trust in God.

For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. (1 Corinthians 1:18, NIV)

God doesn’t meet our expectations, He excels our expectations. All we have to do is lean on His wisdom and let go of ours. His provision comes by grace, and is often displayed in unexpected ways. Rarely the way that we think it will happen and always for the good of our soul.

For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength. (1 Corinthians 1:25, NIV)
