One of my favorite parts of growing up in a church was attending Bible camp at Red Rock Lake. Teen camp to be exact. Every summer I spent a week in a little red cabin, and every summer I was better for it. I loved everything about camp from chapel time with my friends in the morning to meals in the mess hall at lunch.

I must have met hundreds of girls there over the years, but few stood out like Jodi Baker–living life big, and loving the life that she lived. You don’t meet people like that too often–in love with God, in love with their life, and in love with the people around them. If and when you do, they leave a lasting impression on you.

John writes, By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another. (John 13:35 KJV)

The sad thing is that most Christians aren’t all that recognizable. Sure they might know that we go to church, that we listen to worship music, that we carry our Bibles around in our purse, or that we homeschool our children.

But do they know that we are Christians by our love?

Do they see us putting others before ourselves? Do they see us speaking kindly, or putting others down? Do they see us giving up our time to lend a hand?

When we love, we reflect the character of God who gave up His Son so that we might have life.

Paul writes,

With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. (Ephesians 4:2-3, KJV)

I find a footnote in the Amplified Bible that reads, “The key to understanding this and other statements about love is to know that this love (the Greek word agape) is not so much a matter of emotion as it is of doing things for the benefit of another person, that is, having an unselfish concern for another and a willingness to seek the best for another.”

If actions speak louder than words, imagine the potential that love has to not only preach the gospel, but to leave a lasting impression on everyone that we meet.

Tilling the Soil

Make an effort to put others before yourself. Speak kindly instead of putting others down. Give up some time to lend a hand to someone else. In other words, preach the gospel by your love.
