Last night my son came out of his room to offer me some advice, “Mom,” he said, “I have some weight loss tips for you. If you use smaller plates you won’t eat as much. If you use a tall thin glass, you won’t drink as much…” this adorable child went on with a couple of other ideas that he gleaned from a website.

You know–the usual stuff.

All things to trick our minds into thinking we’re eating less instead of simply telling ourselves that we’re eating too much and that we have to cut back.

For most of us it’s a problem with head hunger, not so much our stomach.

I got to thinking about that tonight and I was reminded of yet a third hunger that we’re all dealing with, “heart hunger.” We long to be filled with the things of this world, we long to be loved, and we long to be noticed.

God calls us to walk in humility. He instructs us to esteem others higher than ourselves. He summons us to be a living sacrifice. This call to humility goes against the grain of our sinful nature which hungers to be seen in this world.

But for many of us, purpose is found in those quiet moments when no one but God sees the work of our hands.

Anything that we hunger for in this world including power is merely a pile of dirt compared to the riches that are waiting for those who put their trust in the Lord.

His love is enduring. His love is incomparable. His love is unfailing. And that’s the kind of love He wants us to echo into this world. A love that gives more than it’s given, a lover that forgives before he’s forgiven.

John Cash said it well when he sang his rendition of the song “Hurt,” expressing his feelings of regret and his view on fame:

What have I become
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know goes away
In the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

(lyrics by Trent Reznor)

I think anyone who has reached “the top” would tell you that they’re still longing for something they haven’t achieved. Whether it’s fame or fortune we’re after, nothing can fill us the way that the love of Christ can.

But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. – John 4:14

It might sound cliche, but the truth is that the sooner we unpack the things of this world, including our pride, the sooner God can fully move in our lives.

Finally let’s close with this beautiful example of humility, submission, and lowliness of mind:

Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father. – John 10:17&18

Walk in humility my friends, and until next time…

You are loved by an almighty God,
