This week we’ll be studying chapter 3, “The Feast of First Fruits.” This feast is celebrated on the day after the weekly Sabbath during the Feast of Unleavened Bread. The timing of this feast is incredible as it falls on the exact same day that Jesus rose from the dead.
The Bible tells us, “On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.” (Luke 24:1-3)
What many people don’t realize is that there are three Sabbaths surrounding the Passover Festival. One is on the first day of Unleavened Bread (known as a High Sabbath), one is on the last day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, and one is the weekly Sabbath.
The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. – John 19:31, KJV
There is so much to unpack in this chapter, that I can’t even begin to explain it in a few paragraphs. We talk about the binding of the barley, the bringing in of the sheaves, the sacrifices made at the temple court, the winnowing process, and the importance of the resurrection… This chapter was definitely a learning curve for me, and oh so inspiring!
If you haven’t started already, dig into chapter three. Come back here on Wednesday for your third video lesson as I sit down for a chat with Pastor Dan.
