We all struggle with courage. There’s the one voice that tells us to do what is right, and then there’s another voice, that tells us to do what feels right.
“Take the easy road,” it says. “Walk away before you get hurt.”
“Don’t share your faith, or you might lose a friend.”
“If you speak up, you’ll look like a fool.”
We’ve heard that voice throughout life. The same voice that tells us to eat that third cupcake. The same voice that tells us to stay in bed when we know that we need to get up. The voice that would rather binge Netflix than go for a walk.
It’s almost like we have two brains, one based on fact, and the other on feelings. The Bible describes them by using the terms the “spirit” and “flesh,” saying:
For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. (Galatians 5:17, NIV)
The key to one’s courage, is keeping in step with the Spirit. For it’s through the Spirit and by the Spirit that we are equipped to live victorious lives. It’s a challenge, and some days it’s a knee-knocking, pulse-racing experience, but it’s the path to the cross that leads us to Christlikeness.
The Spirit leads us in paths of righteousness, but in order to follow His lead, we must be willing to surrender our lives to God’s will, and to sacrifice anything that stands in the way.
Don’t be drawn in by the deception of comfort. Sometimes the greatest blessings in life are just outside the comfort zone. The fear of rejection, the fear of failure, and the fear of pain are just a few of the walls that lock us in and hold us back from moving forward in life.
We take our cue from Christ, Who knelt to pray on the night He was betrayed, saying, “Not my will but thine be done.”
