Each time I gather the courage to step out in faith and pursue my calling, a little voice chimes in to tell me I can’t.

“You can’t lead that Bible study, you’re not engaging enough.”

“You can’t write that book, you’re not good enough.”

“You can’t overcome your past; it will always define you.”

“You can’t speak at that meeting, you’ll embarrass yourself.”

If I listened to that voice, I would have quit writing a long time ago. I’d be sitting on the couch flipping channels instead of doing the work God has called me to. If I listened to that voice, I’d miss out on an opportunity to be used by the Lord. I’d miss out on the joy that comes with sharing the gospel.

In those moments of self-doubt, I’m reminded of two things. The first is that God isn’t seeking perfection, instead He’s using our weakness to illustrate the power of Christ.

But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. – 2 Corinthians 12:9 (NIV)

The second is that God’s Spirit works in us and through us to do His good work. He’s the one who opens doors, strengthens the servant, and paves the road for the journey ahead.

For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose. – Philippians 2:13, (NIV)

The enemy loves to use our insecurities to weaponize our thoughts, undermine our faith, and draw us away from God’s purpose. And so, it’s important that we’re looking to God for the source of our strength, and placing our trust in His capable hands.

Who would have thought God would use a prostitute like Rahab to help the Israelites, or choose a timid farmer like Gideon to lead an army? And who would’ve imagined Peter, a humble fisherman, becoming a founding leader of the early church?

Yes, we’re flawed and we’re weak and imperfect, and yes, we have failed just like every other believer that has gone on before us. But, here’s the thing: don’t let your past dictate your future. Don’t let insecurity cause you to doubt the power of God and His ability to work through you. Trust in His plan, rely on His strength, and allow His Spirit to lead you.

You are loved by an almighty God,
