Jacob Bible Study – Genesis 25

Before We Begin
Welcome to our 11-week Bible study on Jacob. Grab your Bible, find a comfy spot to soak in His word, and get ready to study the life of Jacob!
I want to start by pointing out that although we initially planned for 7 weeks, we’ve extended our time to 11 weeks to ensure that we cover every important aspect of Jacob’s story.
Each Tuesday, I’ll share a YouTube video along with a memory verse and my opening thoughts for the week. On Fridays, I’ll post additional reflections as we progress.
Throughout the study, you’ll notice that I often use typologies to illustrate biblical truths. These typologies help us see the connections between the Old and New Testaments and deepen our understanding of God’s redemptive plan. As you read these throughout the study, keep in mind that this is only one way that God is revealing the scripture to us, and that there may be other ways to view it as well. Open your heart to His guidance and the many ways He speaks to you through His word.
the battle within
As I was watching Karissa’s video this week, she mentioned something I didn’t catch as I was writing the study. It’s found in Genesis 25:22, where Rebecca, pregnant with twins, feels an intense struggle within her and asks, “Why is this happening to me?”
As believers, we might find ourselves asking the same question at times as the spirit within us battles against the flesh. We might wonder why we’re still struggling with the sin and temptation we so desperately want to leave in our past. We find ourselves standing at the crossroads of temptation again and again, as the battle within us wars on.
I’ve come to learn over time that God’s answer to prayer isn’t one-size-fits-all. It’s different for all of us, and different each time. Some walk away from a stronghold and never look back, while others are drawn to the same place time and again.
Consider the battle of Jericho: what could have been won in an instant took seven days, as their obedience was tested. In contrast, the battle against the Amalekites in Exodus 17 was won swiftly when Moses held up his hands, supported by Aaron and Hur. As long as his hands were raised, Israel prevailed.
By this we see that sometimes victory comes quickly and directly through God’s power, while other times it requires persistent prayer and obedience.
The Bible doesn’t say that our lives will be simple and stress-free. It tells us that “the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh” (Galatians 5:17, NIV). There’s a battle to be won, and the battleground is our hearts and minds.
But there’s good news for those who walk in the Spirit: we’re empowered to fight the good fight and finish the race. By the power of the Holy Spirit working through us we have everything we need to overcome the battles within us and live victorious lives for His glory. As Lysa Terkeurst once wrote, “The devil is vicious, but he’s not victorious. And you, my friend, have everything you need to defeat him.”
Just as Jacob wrestled with God and was ultimately transformed, we too can be changed through our struggles and reliance on Him.
And so, Ephesians 6:10-18 encourages us to “be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes… Take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.”
This Week’s Challenge
This week, take some time each day to reflect on areas in your life where you feel the struggle between spirit and flesh. Write down these areas in a journal and pray specifically for God’s strength and guidance in overcoming these battles. Each day, read and meditate on our Bible verse from Philippians 3:14, and ask the Holy Spirit to empower you to press on.
