A Place of Refuge

The other night, I received a text from a friend who is currently living in a safe shelter for women. She’s had a difficult life and spent years on the streets, so when she sent me photos of the quilt on her bed, I could tell right away how much it meant to her.

And honestly, it was beautiful.

The fabric was covered in vintage storybook squares, each one featuring a little woodland fairy painted in soft, romantic colours. Beneath every illustration was a name, and my friend had already started getting to know them.

Apparently, the quilt had been donated to the shelter some time ago, and she told me she couldn’t imagine leaving without taking it with her.

“I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know their names,” she said. “I’m never letting it go!”

I smiled when I read that.

Because who would have guessed that something as simple as a donated quilt could mean so much?

To someone else, it might have just been an extra blanket tucked away in a closet. But to her, it had become something much more. It was warmth. It was comfort. It was something beautiful in the middle of a difficult season. In its own small way, it reminded her that she was safe, cared for, and surrounded by kindness.

As she looked at those little fairies, she told me they made her think about God’s angels watching over her. And just like that, a conversation about a quilt opened the door to a deeper conversation about the care and protection of God.

Isn’t that just like Him?

He can use the simplest things to turn our hearts toward Him.

This week in our study, we’re talking about what it means to be a place of refuge to others. And the more I thought about that quilt, the more I realized that refuge doesn’t always look the way we expect it to.

Sometimes we think of refuge as a building—a shelter, a home, a place where someone can close the door and finally feel safe.

And sometimes it is.

But refuge can also be found in the kindness of another person. It can be the friend who answers the phone when your heart is heavy, the woman who listens without trying to fix everything, or the person who simply stays close when life feels like too much.

Sometimes refuge is found in the friend who reminds us we don’t have to carry our burdens alone.

Sometimes refuge is found in the friend who reminds us we don’t have to carry our burdens alone.

God is our true refuge. He is our comfort and our strength. But one of the beautiful things about belonging to Him is that the comfort He gives us is meant to be shared.

Paul writes that God “comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God” (2 Corinthians 1:4, NIV).

Did you catch that?

God comforts us so that we can comfort someone else.

Yet, so often, we hesitate to step into another person’s pain. We freeze up because we think we need to have the right answers, or worse, that it’s our job to fix what’s broken.

But comfort isn’t a cure. People rarely need a profound sermon when they are hurting—they just need a reminder that somebody sees them and cares.

Jesus noticed people. He saw the ones others passed by. He stopped for the hurting, the lonely, the weary, and the overlooked. And as His followers, we’re called to notice them too.

That’s part of what it means to become a place of refuge.

And we may never know how much those small things mean.

But God knows.

And I think that’s something we need to remember.

We don’t have to do something enormous to make a difference in someone’s life.

Sometimes love looks wonderfully ordinary.

Sometimes it looks like showing up.

Sometimes it looks like listening.

And sometimes, it looks like a quilt.

Sometimes love looks wonderfully ordinary.
