Hey ladies! Are you ready for Chapter 1 of our Bible study on ‘The 7 Virtues of a Proverbs 31 Woman?’ This week, our focus is on inner beauty. You see, true beauty isn’t about the latest trends or flawless skin. It’s about the beauty that God places within our hearts. Throughout the week, we’ll draw inspiration from the lives of remarkable Biblical figures, like Ruth and Esther, who exemplified this virtue in extraordinary ways. We’ll also turn to our Lord Jesus, the epitome of character and love, as a source of wisdom. Join me on this journey as we uncover the true meaning of inner beauty, according to God’s Word.
A Sweet Word from Karissa
It’s human nature to be drawn to beautiful things–at least it’s my nature. Whether it’s a must-have pair of shoes, a newly decorated farmhouse kitchen, or a fresh face on a magazine cover, we find ourselves captivated by society’s standard of beauty. What’s interesting about this mindset is that such beauty is fleeting. Remember Grandma’s old sofa back in the 1970s? Chances are, it was bold and flamboyant. The pattern was a combination of loud and clashing colors like mustard yellow, burnt orange, or deep brown. Grandpa’s pants matched the sofa perfectly, with his plaid trousers seeming to mirror the wild, vibrant patterns of the upholstery. The makeup was loud, the perfume was strong, and perms were all the rage.
You’ll find the odd person that still prefers that style, but for the majority of us, it’s more likely to induce a chuckle than admiration. Does this mean that our grandparents didn’t have good taste back then? Or could it be that our perception of beauty is as transient and fluid as the trends that dictate it?
The criterion for what is considered ‘beautiful’ or ‘stylish’ is not set in stone; it ebbs and flows like the tide, influenced by a myriad of social, cultural, and personal factors. The irony of this phenomenon is that, in our pursuit of beauty, we’re actually chasing an ever-moving target.
As believers, we’re wisely reminded that true beauty is not defined by outward appearances. The beauty that truly captivates others emanates from within and reflects the qualities of a heart transformed by God’s love.
When the prophet Samuel was sent to anoint the future king of Israel, he was drawn to the outward appearance of Jesse’s eldest son, Eliab. Samuel thought surely this must be the chosen one, but God’s perspective was different. The Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7).
This passage echoes 1 Peter 3:4, which states that ‘the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit is of great worth in God’s sight.’
Inner beauty transcends the limitations of age and cultural norms. Unlike the fleeting trends of societal standards, the enduring beauty of a virtuous woman is steadfast and firm. Her beauty lies in a noble character that stands the test of time.

Thanks Amy!! So glad you are joining us. Have a great summer!
I agree that the first thing that came to my mind when reading the chapter about selflessness was the virtue of patience.
As a Kindergarten teacher naturally I have to practice patience very regularly but I have found myself becoming short the last few days, so that was my big focus this week slowing down and exercising patience. It wasn’t easy the first full week after we had a 5 day break from school but it definitely made school much more enjoyable for my students and I, especially as we were getting in the Christmas spirit together as December begins.
Teachers do what I could never do. I think it takes a special kind of person to step into that job. And, it’s extra special when a teacher, like you, can recognize a weakness and work to strengthen it, for the benefit of those around her. I’ll say an extra prayer for you today asking God to strengthen you in this area. <3
