MY THOUGHTS ON Genesis 28

Have you ever experienced a moment when you felt God’s presence so profoundly that it changed your life forever? These are the Bethel moments in our lives—those unexpected, transformative encounters with God that can happen anywhere at any time. Much like Jacob’s dream of the ladder reaching up to heaven, Bethel moments are beautiful reminders of God’s constant presence and faithfulness.

I’ve had a Bethel moment myself. A few of them, in fact. But the one that stands out the most happened about 25 years ago. I had always dreamed of becoming a home decorator. I was completely obsessed with the idea. If I wasn’t painting a room or sanding an old cabinet, I was poring over the pages of Country Living Magazine, looking for new ways to spruce up our home.

Finally, my dream seemed within reach. I signed up for a course at the local college, paid my tuition, and marked the date on our calendar. I was so excited about the changes and challenges that lay ahead. One sunny afternoon, as my children were napping, I settled in for a little quiet time on the sofa. The sky was blue, and the sun was bright and warm. As I looked out at the afternoon sky, I suddenly felt an overwhelming sense of peace and presence, as if God was wrapping His arms around me. Then I heard a gentle whisper in my heart.

“Study Me,” He said. “Use the time that you would for school to immerse yourself in My Word. Give Me those hours, and see what I can do with them.” That moment changed everything for me. Instead of pursuing my dream of becoming a home decorator, I spent the next year studying the Bible for six to eight hours each day. I didn’t know where God was leading me or what I would do with the lessons I learned. In fact, it wasn’t until about 15 years later that I started to see His purpose unfold.

Sometimes, in the midst of our ordinary routines, God breaks through with extraordinary moments of clarity and peace. These are our Bethel moments, where His presence becomes undeniably real and our lives are forever changed. Just as Jacob’s encounter with God at Bethel marked a turning point in his life, our own Bethel moments can happen to any of us and transform our lives in profound ways.

They aren’t confined to dramatic or extraordinary events. They can occur in the midst of our daily routines and ordinary tasks. The key is to remain open and attentive to God’s voice, ready to respond to His gentle nudge.

To recognize your own Bethel moments, take time to slow down and seek God’s presence. Set aside moments of quiet reflection and be mindful of the ways God might be speaking to you. Whether through a verse of Scripture, a prayer, or even the beauty of nature, God can reveal Himself in powerful ways. By being open to the Spirit, we can deepen our relationship with God and discover His purpose for our lives.

  1. This is so good and hit so many “spiritual nerves” as I read about your “Bethel moment.” Too often I find myself too focused on the “thing” instead of on my Savior, when what I need to be doing is leaning on Him, “being still and KNOWING HE IS GOD.” Psalm 46:10
For quite some time I’ve told my husband that I could spend all day just studying God’s Word-I actually want to do that, but I “feel” guilty because I am not up physically doing something. As I read this and saw where you said you studied God’s Word 8-9 hours a day, that “spoke” to me!!! The guilt I “feel” is not of God it’s the evil one, and the thing I need to be doing is studying His Word for hours and it’s ok to do that. I’m in a season where I have the time to sit all day if needed with my Savior in His Word, and guilt is not welcome!!!! I’ve wanted to write for years, but I don’t know what that looks like, but what I do know is I don’t need to focus on the writing, but on my Savior and spending time with Him, leaning and resting on Him!!! I am so thankful to God I can do this, I don’t have a job outside of our home 🏠 that I have to go to, thank God! I have lots of time to “be still” with Him! It’s truly what my heart desires to just be with my Savior! Praise God!!! 🙌✝️🩵
