Way back in the day when my kids were still knee-high to a fly, a friend told me that one of the best gifts she gave to her family was a good attitude.

“I make a point,” she said, “of greeting them with a smile each and every morning.”

As I got to thinking about that, I decided to take on her habit and make it my own. I wanted to be the first smile they saw in the morning, and the last one they saw every night. So I did. And do you know what? From what I can remember, I didn’t miss a single day, unless I was sick in bed.

Of course, there were days when I started out with a smile and ended up feeling sour, but for the most part, our days started out well. I quickly learned from my friend that a good attitude set the tone in our home.

It’s been said, “When mama’s happy everyone’s happy.” But that’s not always the case, is it? A bad attitude is a fly in the ointment. It can suck the joy out of a home faster than anything else. We all have a part to play, and we all have an opportunity to try.

As I started thinking about a verse for today, it was hard to find just one. I realized that the entire love chapter applies to our attitude. The fruit of the Spirit does too. When we love others we’re patient and kind, when we love God we’re gentle and joyful, and good.

So, maybe we don’t have it all together, maybe we’re a cup half empty in the morning, instead of a cup half full. But if we love God we can worship God by gently loving and serving His people.

Tilling the Soil

Make a point to start each day off with a smile and a good attitude.

Planting Hope

When a man is gloomy, everything seems to go wrong; when he is cheerful, everything seems right! (Proverbs 15:15, TLB)

I don’t usually quote from The Living Bible, but this is the exact verse I used to have hanging in my locker throughout high school. It’s kind of my go-to verse for a good attitude, so I wanted to share it with y’all!
