This afternoon, I went back to Genesis chapter 1, where it all began. The creation of man, the creation of all that we see, hear, touch, and taste. What a beautiful story it is.

As I read those historical words, I began to see something I’d never noticed before. I saw a parallel between the creation of earth and the “new creation” of man.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! (2 Corinthians 5:17, NIV)

The Bible tells us that the earth was without form, and void; and that darkness was upon the face of the deep. I too was in darkness, with a void that nothing but Christ could fill. And then there was light.

And God separated the light from the darkness as we, His children, are separated from sin.

And God made two lights to shine in the sky. The greater to shine in the day and the lesser to shine in the night. What I see there are two lights, the greater being that of our Savior, “The Light of Life,” the lesser, his children “the light of the world.”

Here’s the interesting thing about those two lights: while the sun shines brightly in and of itself, the moon is merely a reflection of that light. Apart from Christ, there is no light, but by Him and through Him we shine. We shine to show others His goodness and grace, we shine to glorify God.

By this we see the beautiful way that the heavens declare the glory of God, and the wonderful way that scripture has pointed to Christ from the very beginning of time.
