I was blessed with a visit from my grandchildren today. Little Joseph just might be the easiest-going baby I’ve ever seen. As long as he’s changed and well fed, he’s a quiet little fellow who enjoys his sleep. His sister on the other hand is a bundle of energy that never slows down.
While curiosity leads her to discover new things, I happened to notice a little something she does. She keeps her eyes on her mom. It’s almost like she checks in with mom every once in a while to see if Madison’s watching, and to ensure that she’s on the right track.
She got me thinking of my own children. How they checked in with mom on a regular basis, and how that’s progressed over time. How they still call me even now–to check in, to get my opinion, to ask for advice…
As I got to thinking about that today, I was reminded of my need to check in with the Father. To ask for advice, to grow in His likeness, and to ensure that I’m on the right track.
Peter writes,
Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation. (1 Peter 2:2, NIV)
Check in with God. Crave the pure spiritual milk of His Word to ensure that you’re on the right track. Too many believers have taken their eyes off of God. They’re turning them onto their pastors and they’re turning them onto their friends. But, while others may be a great source of encouragement to us, they’re not the benchmark we desperately need.
Benchmark: a standard of excellence, achievement, etc., against which similar things must be measured or judged. (dictionary.com)
I like that word “benchmark.” It reminds me how a “similar” thought is not always correct. It must be measured and judged against the truth of God’s Word. Sometimes it veers off of the mark just a bit. Barely recognizable, yet enough to lead us astray. So while we have pastors, and mentors, and friends, check in with the Father. Keep your eyes on His Word.
