20 years ago, we had a mouse problem. A big mouse problem. Just when we thought we caught them all, we’d find that another one moved in with an even larger family than the last. It was the year we discovered that mice can squeeze through cracks about the size of a pencil. It was also the year that we learned how destructive these rodents can be.

So it is with temptation and sin. It doesn’t need a lot of space to slip through. And so we must be proactive when it comes to guarding our hearts.

Satan’s destructive. He tells us that it’s more important to be right than it is to do right. He makes us feel little, while he tempts us to grasp a false sense of importance. He’s deceptive. He interferes with God’s word by twisting the truth into a lie. He beckons us to hold on to anger and hate, and rejects the mere thought of humility.

We talked about the job of the watchman the other day and the importance of guarding our hearts. And how do we do that? Simply put, by being careful about the things we allow into our hearts. Wisely discerning the things that we see, those things that we hear, and the words that we read.

Finally, and most importantly, by living according to God’s Word.
