The word “parable” is commonly associated with the New Testament. When we hear the word we’re quickly reminded of the wisdom of Jesus and the parables that He used to illustrate truth. If you turn back the pages, however, you’ll find a little parable tucked away in the pages of the Old Testament.

In Ezekiel chapter 3 we see that God had appointed Ezekiel as a watchman. In those days towers were built so that a watchman could stand guard to look over the fields or the gates of a city. Because of its height, one could see the enemy approaching from a distance giving them enough time to sound a warning. The parable points out that those who hear the sound also have the responsibility of heeding the warning.

So it is with those who hear the Word of God. As believers, we have a responsibility to take action, to adhere to God’s Word, and to protect ourselves from the enemy. If we hope to grow in our faith, we need to be heeding the word, not just reading the Word.
