Today’s Scattered Seeds

One of the things I liked most about growing up were late afternoons. Walking through the door after the 4 o’clock bell and smelling the goodness of home. Sometimes it was bread and sometimes it was buns–buns so good I’d eat them straight from the oven, no butter necessary. And then there was the big pot rumbling on the stove. Curious kids had to know what was cooking inside, and it all smelled so good.

If there was one thing that mom could do well, it was cook. The sweet aroma of her sacrifice was a sign of her love to each one that lived in our home. Dad would walk in at 5:00 and be greeted with the same sweet smell of her love and devotion. A smell that told us we were welcome, we were loved, and that belonged.

In a similar way, the Bible compares our sacrificial love to a sweet aroma that is pleasing to God. The sacrifice of our lips, the sacrifice of our love, and the sacrifice of our life all pointing to the One Who gave Himself up as a sacrifice–a sweet-smelling aroma to God.

And walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. (Ephesians 5:2, NIV)

Tilling the Soil

Read Genesis chapter 8. Notice the first thing that Noah does when he finally steps off of the ark. He makes an altar and offers a sweet sacrifice to the Lord.
