Daily Devotion - When it Comes to the Lord, Go Straight to the Source

In grade ten, we had an incredible art teacher. She taught me how to mix colors, how to hold my brush, and that the first rule of art is to draw what you see, not what you think you should see. You have to accept that reality and perception are two different things as you let your eyes lead your hand.

As I got to thinking about this today I was reminded of faith. How the reality of God and our perception of God are often two different things. The way we perceive God dictates the way we respond to God’s will. The question is, what is our perception of God? And, what is it based on?

For many of us, it’s based on the way we were raised, what we were taught, and Who they told us God was. But for the wise stewards among us, it’s based on God’s Word.

Have you ever played the game “Telephone?” It’s a popular children’s game. Everyone sits in a circle, and then they begin with the first person whispering a message into the next person’s ear. That person relays the message to the third person, and the whispering continues until the last person receives the message and announces what they’ve heard. More times than not, the message gets so jumbled along the line that it’s unrecognizable.

That’s what happens to the gospel when it’s filtered from one generation through to the next and so on… By the time it hits your ear, it’s barely recognizable, which is why it’s important that we always go straight to the source.

“Confirm what you learn.” That’s what my pastor used to say.

But, more importantly, what does God have to say?

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. (2 Timothy 2:15, KJV)
