Daily Devotion – When You Don’t Have the Courage to Be Who You Are

Daily Devotion - When You Don't Have the Courage to Be Who You Are

When I heard the knock on the door, there was only one thing on my mind: I was a mess. I was ten feet from the front door in a mismatched pair of PJs and a not-so-great messy bun. This wasn’t the cute kind of look you get when celebrities are caught without make-up. This was the real me, bed head and all. The me you don’t see on Facebook, on Instagram, or anywhere near the eye of the public for that matter.

After running to the bedroom for a two-minute makeover, I returned to the door where Michael was chatting with an old friend of ours. This girl knows how to bake, and she bakes well, which is a blessing for us since she dropped off cinnamon buns, and apple cinnamon muffins.

Maybe you don’t know this about me, but here’s the thing–I don’t bake. At all. I can cook well enough, but when it comes to baking I wouldn’t even know where to start. It’s kind of funny, isn’t it? I’m the Time-Warp Wife and I buy my cinnamon buns at the grocery store. I get my cookies from a box and my bread from a bag.

I have a crooked arm, essential tremor, I struggle with my weight, and I fight depression. I hate being in front of a camera because I feel like I don’t measure up to the women around me. I’m not telling you this because I’m sad, I’m telling you this because I want you to know that just like so many of you, I struggle.

Satan will always try to magnify our flaws and make us insecure, In hopes that by doing so we lose our courage and turn our eyes away from God.

Many step back in fear before stepping forward in faith. Others miss out on the simple yet joyful things in life like getting together for coffee with a friend, going to the beach, or taking selfies with their kids. Why? Because they don’t have the courage to be who they are. They don’t realize that all their imperfections are the very things that make them beautiful.

There’s a reason we don’t have what this or that woman has. We’re incomparable. We’re not any more, and we’re not any less than another, we’re just different. We’re uniquely created according to a divine set of plans. Every spot and every wrinkle you have was formed by His hands. The fact that you are different, is what makes you special. And, in fact, no one on earth has what you have.

Tilling the Soil

If you’ve been held back by insecurity or self-doubt, do something courageous this week like sharing your faith, leading a Bible study, posting a selfie, or meeting up with a friend for a walk… Have the courage to be who you are and not who you think you should be.

Planting Hope

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go. (Joshua 1:9, KJV)

Darlene Schacht and her husband Michael live in Manitoba Canada where the summers are beautiful and the winters are cold. Together they’ve come to learn that relationships aren’t always easy, but that marriage, the way God intended it to be, is a treasure worth fighting for.

She began her publishing journey about twelve years ago when she pioneered one of the first online magazines for Christian women, known at the time as “Christian Women Online Magazine.” After three years, Darlene left CWO to blog as a solo author at Time-Warp Wife Ministries.

It was also during this transition that she worked alongside actress Candace Cameron Bure to write the NYT Best-Selling book, Reshaping it All: Motivation for Spiritual and Physical Fitness. Reshaping it All was the winner of both the 2011 USA Best Book Awards and the 2012 Christian Reading Retailers Choice Awards.

Author of more than 15 books, Darlene continues to write and to minister to her readers through her blog at TimeWarpWife.com.

Kind Words

candace1

"I'm absolutely in awe of your writing, the way you pulled biblical principles and weaved them into life application. I'm amazed at how you were able to expand upon simple words like action, self discipline, motivation, intention, etc.--and write thought provoking information to actually help one change their mind-set and pursue their goals.

The way you weaved my stories into all these principles leaves me speechless."
