Tonight as I was driving by Starbucks, I saw the cutest thing ever, a man with a little girl in a fluffy pink coat sitting on top his shoulders. I stopped the car to let them pass by, and as I did I caught a glimpse of her smile. Perhaps it’s not the cutest thing you’ve ever seen, but I’ve always had a soft spot when it comes to piggy-back rides.
It brought me back to the days when my boys were still small enough to hoist up in the air. During worship time either Michael or my oldest son Brendan would throw Nathaniel up onto their shoulders so that he could see the worship team and clap along with them. Sometimes Nathaniel and Graham would both be up there praising the Lord.
Looking to scripture I’m reminded of Zacheus, a wee little man who climbed a sycamore tree so that he could see Jesus.
And he [Zacheus] sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature. And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycomore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, “Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for to day I must abide at thy house.” ~ Luke 19:3-5
What I love about Zacheus, and always have, is that he wasn’t willing to let Jesus walk by without making an effort to see him. Not just a glance from the crowd, but the best view he could find.
What about me? I have a choice. Certainly I could let Jesus walk by, with the occasional glance at my Bible, or I could eagerly pursue Him to be a part of our family. I choose to pursue.
“As for me and my house. We will serve the Lord.” ~ Joshua 24:15b
To me pursuit includes effort and purpose. It’s seeking the will of the Lord in lieu of my own whether it be through searching the scriptures or taking my burden to prayer. It’s climbing every branch of the tree to see Jesus.
These days we hear much about “time,” or should I say the lack of it. With 24 hours in a day few people find time to climb trees anymore. After a long day of chasing a toddler, or crunching numbers at work, who has the energy to crack open a Bible and read it?
“Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” ~ Matthew 11:29-30
There are days when I need to stop and remind myself that Jesus isn’t my English teacher. We don’t have to read 60 pages by Friday, and we aren’t going to be tested on that which we’ve read.
“Make haste, and come down; for to day I must abide at thy house.”
Abide at thy house. Do you see that? Yes, God wants us to open up the scriptures and He wants us to go to Him in prayer–absolutely–but what He’s really seeking is a relationship with you. That’s the kind of pursuit I’m talking about.
Regardless of where you are, whether it’s you standing at the change table singing to your little one, doing dishes at the sink, or riding the bus on your way home from work, invite Jesus in.
Start thinking about Him, start talking about Him, and start talking to Him. That’s how we engage with our Savior, and that’s how we open the door so that He might engage with us.
