No One Can Steal Your Joy (Unless You Let Them)
Have you ever caught yourself thinking, I was having such a great day until that person ruined it? Or maybe you’ve said, I was so happy until they made me sad. It’s easy to think that other people have the power to control how we feel, isn’t it? But here’s the thing—that’s not true. No one can make us angry, bitter, or discouraged. They don’t have the power to control what we feel inside.
Picture this: You’re out for lunch with a friend, and both of you run into the same difficult person. You know the type—they say something cutting or rude, leaving you stunned. One of you brushes it off, letting the insults roll off you. But the other? They feel the sting. It sits with them long after lunch is over. Same situation, two totally different responses. Why? Because our emotions come from within. They’re not handed to us by somebody else.
And that brings me to Job. If anyone had a reason to lose hope, it was him. His life completely fell apart—he lost his wealth, his children, and even his health. One minute he had it all, and the next, he was sitting in ashes, scraping sores with broken pottery. Can you how difficult that must have been? And yet, even in his lowest moment, Job chose to say:
“The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised.” (Job 1:21)
Was Job heartbroken? Yes. Was he grieving? Absolutely. But he refused to curse God. He didn’t understand why this was happening, but he made a choice: he would trust God anyway.
Then there’s Job’s wife. She was in the same boat—she lost her children, her wealth, her comfort. But her response? She turned to Job and said, “Are you still maintaining your integrity? Curse God and die!” (Job 2:9) Her pain overwhelmed her. She let her circumstances steal her hope.
Two people. Same tragedy. But their responses couldn’t have been more different. Job’s trust in God anchored him. His wife’s focus on the pain left her in despair. Their story reminds us that our joy isn’t determined by what happens to us; it’s determined by what we believe. Do we trust God in the middle of the storm, or do we let the storm take control?
This week, we’re diving into God’s plan for our lives. It’s not always what we expect, and sometimes it’s not what we wanted. But here’s the good news: His plan is always good. Psalm 46:5 says, “God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day.” Now, I know what some of you might be thinking—That was about Jerusalem! And you’re right. But let me remind you of something: we serve the same God. He is still our refuge, our strength, and our ever-present help in trouble. Even when the earth shakes, when the mountains crumble—when life feels like it’s falling apart—we have an unshakable source of hope.
Think about what Elisha’s servant saw in 2 Kings 6. He looked out and saw an army surrounding them, and he panicked. But when God opened his eyes, what did he see? A heavenly army of horses and chariots of fire—completely surrounding the enemy. What seemed impossible was already under God’s control. And friend, the same is true for us. We may not see the whole picture, but God is fighting for us. Right now.
So, the next time you catch yourself thinking, That person just ruined my day, stop. Remind yourself of this truth: they can’t take what you don’t give them. Hold on to your peace. Hold on to your faith. And like Job, choose to trust that God is still in control.

This Week’s Challenge
At the end of each day this week, take a few minutes to reflect on one situation where you felt tempted to let someone steal your joy. Think about how you responded. Did you let it go, or did you hold onto it? If you held onto it, ask yourself what you could do differently next time to protect your peace. Then, bring it to God in prayer. Ask Him for wisdom, strength, and grace to respond in a way that honors Him and guards your joy in the future.
