Joy Points Others to Christ

This week in our study we’re looking at two incredible stories that give us an insight on joy–Paul and Silas in Acts 16 and the healing of the lame man in Acts 3. Two completely different situations, yet both reveal something powerful: joy speaks volumes about where we place our faith.

One man was lame from birth. Every day, he sat outside the temple, hoping for a few coins—just enough to get by. But then Peter and John showed up. And instead of silver or gold, they gave him something far better. Healing. Freedom. A brand-new life. And how did he respond? He went walking, leaping, and praising God! That joy wasn’t quiet. It wasn’t subtle. It was loud. It got people’s attention. It pointed them straight to Jesus.

Then there’s Paul and Silas. No miraculous healing for them—just bruises, shackles, and the cold walls of a prison cell. But instead of sinking into despair, they sang. They worshiped. In the darkest part of the night, after being beaten and thrown into jail, they chose joy. And their joy? It wasn’t just for them. It moved the other prisoners. It moved the jailer. It moved heaven itself. An earthquake shook the ground, prison doors flew open, and a hardened Roman guard fell to his knees, asking how to be saved.

See the pattern here? Joy isn’t just personal—it’s powerful.

But, here’s what trips us up. We think joy is something that just happens to us—when life is good, when prayers are answered, when everything falls into place. But real, biblical joy? It’s a decision.

Joy isn’t pretending things are fine when they’re not. It’s not ignoring pain, disappointment, or fear. It’s fixing our eyes on Jesus instead of our circumstances. It’s choosing to believe He’s still in control, still good, still faithful—no matter what.

That’s what Hannah did in 1 Samuel 1, and we’re talking about her this week too! She poured out her heart to God, aching for a child. And even before she saw her prayer answered, her sorrow lifted. She walked away from that moment with peace—not because her situation had changed, but because she had placed it in God’s hands.

Joy isn’t about what’s happening around us. It’s about what’s happening inside us.

“Joy isn’t about what’s happening around us. It’s about what’s happening inside us.”

And so, let’s hold onto this truth: joy speaks volumes about where we place our faith.

The lame man’s joy? It declared that Jesus heals.
Paul and Silas’ joy? It testified that Jesus is worthy of worship—even in suffering.
Hannah’s joy? It revealed that true peace comes from trusting God before the breakthrough.”

And, your joy? It tells a story, too.

So let me ask you—what is your joy saying? Is it pointing people to Christ? Is it showing the world where you place your faith? Because, remember, joy isn’t just for us. It’s a witness. And when we walk in it, even when life is hard, people take notice. And God gets the glory.

This Week’s Challenge

Each day, take a moment to choose joy—no matter what comes your way. Whether through gratitude, worship, or encouraging someone else, let your joy be a testimony that points others to Christ.
