Chapter 3 – Joy

This week as we explore the fruit of the Spirit, we dive into the essence of ‘Joy’. However, the joy we’re discussing isn’t the type rooted in temporary happenings or surface-level pleasures. It’s a deep-seated, unwavering joy anchored in our relationship with God. It’s about finding contentment and delight in our walk with Him, even amidst challenging circumstances.
As we explore the life of Paul in our study guide this week, I’d also like to draw your attention to Nehemiah, a man whose journey mirrors Paul’s in intriguing ways. Both were builders—Paul spiritually, as he laid the foundations of the early Church, and Nehemiah physically, as he took on the formidable task of rebuilding Jerusalem’s walls. Despite the overwhelming challenges they encountered, both men found strength and unwavering joy in God’s promises. Their faith served as a fortress, their resilient joy a testament to their profound trust in God’s purpose.
In the face of criticism, threat, and outright opposition, Nehemiah remained steadfast, reminding the people, “Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” (Nehemiah 8:10, NIV). His message is clear: our strength doesn’t come from our abilities, circumstances, or successes. No, it comes from the joy found only in the Lord.
May we take Nehemiah’s words to heart as we face our own walls of difficulties. Let’s remember that true joy isn’t about circumstantial happiness but about inner peace and satisfaction in knowing our Lord and His promises. And most importantly, let’s allow this joy to be our strength, guiding us through the trials we face.
Let’s strive to cultivate this form of joy in our lives – the joy of the Lord – and allow it to empower us in all circumstances, just like Paul and Nehemiah did.

Chapter 4 – Peace
In this week’s study, we’re immersing ourselves in the story of David, who in the midst of turbulence discovered a wellspring of peace within. As I got to thinking about that this week, I was reminded of a story from the book of Mark about a storm, a group of fearful disciples, and a sleeping Savior. It’s a story that beautifully captures the true essence of peace amidst life’s raging storms.
The Bible tells us that the disciples were out on a boat when a violent storm struck without warning. Waves crashed over the boat, flooding it with water. Panic soared while fear seized their hearts. And where was Jesus during all the chaos? He was in the stern, sleeping soundly on a cushion.
Terrified for their lives, they woke Jesus with a question that still resonates in our fearful hearts today, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” (Mark 4:38, NIV)
Upon waking, Jesus rose, chastised the wind, and commanded the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” In an instant, the wind abated, and absolute calm prevailed.
Then Jesus addressed His disciples, “Why were you so afraid? Did you still have no faith?” (Mark 4:40, NIV)
These words from Jesus invite us to examine our own hearts when we find ourselves in the midst of life’s storms. Are we quick to panic and lose hope? Or do we possess the kind of peace that comes from faith – the faith that trusts that even in the storm, Jesus is with us and has power over all things?
This peace is not the absence of trouble. It’s not a tranquil life where everything goes according to plan. No, this peace is a deep-seated confidence and trust in the God who rules over the storms of life. It’s a peace that reminds us that, even though the boat is rocking, and the waves are crashing, we are safe because Jesus is with us.
Jesus didn’t promise us a life without storms, but He did promise His peace in the midst of those storms. He said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14:27, NIV)
As believers, we can experience this peace, the peace that surpasses all understanding. It’s a peace that guards our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7). This peace steadies our souls, calms our fears, and anchors us in the midst of life’s fiercest storms.
So today, if you’re facing a storm, remember the story of Jesus calming the sea. Trust that the same Jesus who calmed that storm can calm the storm you’re facing. He may not remove the storm, but He promises to give you His peace within it.
Turn to Him in prayer, surrender your worries, and let His peace wash over you. Know that with Jesus in your boat, you have nothing to fear. Let His peace calm your heart, steady your soul, and anchor you in His unchanging love and faithfulness.
