Ladies, we’ve reached the final post of our 11-week study. I can’t believe how quickly the summer has flown by, can you? It’s been too fast for my liking, but as my brother-in-law often says, “It’s all God’s business.”

As we wrap up, I’ve been getting a lot of questions about the next study—what’s the topic, and when will it start? I do have some answers for you! I’ve been working on a Bible study based on the book of James. The writing is complete, but I’m still finishing up the graphics, cover design, and final edits. With that said, I hope to have all the details ready for you sometime next week. So, stay tuned!

MY THOUGHTS ON Genesis 35

We all know someone who quilts, right? It’s a common thread in many families. In fact, I dabbled in quilting myself, but let me tell you, very few people quilt like my sisters. Bonnie and Kathy have taken this craft to a whole new level, and their sewing rooms are living proof of their passion. Kathy has devoted more than half of her basement to her sewing space. Walking into her room is like stepping into a miniature craft store, where every nook and cranny is bursting with charm. Then there’s Bonnie’s room—it’s simply adorable, with a vintage flair that makes you want to linger a while. The moment you step inside, you just don’t want to leave.

While I’ve pieced together a few quilts in my time, Bonnie and Kathy have each made well over a hundred, pouring their time and love into them and donating most of these quilts to hospitals, veterans, and children in care. One of their more unique projects is something they call the “Scrap Bag Challenges.” Imagine this—getting all excited about a bag of fabric scraps that most of us would toss in the trash. For just a few dollars, they buy paper bags stuffed with random and sometimes odd-looking scraps of fabric. Their challenge is to use every single scrap in the bag, with just one additional fabric of choice. I don’t know how they do it, but somehow these mismatched, discarded pieces are skillfully arranged, stitched together, and transformed into a beautiful, intricate quilt.

As I got to thinking about Jacob’s life this week, over the eleven chapters we covered, I was reminded of those quilts. Just as discarded pieces of fabric are essential to creating a beautiful quilt, God used the seemingly broken and flawed aspects of Jacob’s life—his deceit, struggles, and family conflicts—to fulfill His divine purpose. Jacob’s selfish act of deception, which led him to manipulate his father, set in motion a series of events that shaped his life. This journey took him away from his family and into the home of his uncle Laban, where he faced years of hardship and toil. These years, marked by deception and betrayal, were the very circumstances through which God molded Jacob’s character, teaching him lessons of humility, perseverance, and reliance on God’s faithfulness.

What might have seemed like a series of unfortunate events or personal failures were, in fact, all part of God’s plan. Every thread of struggle, every knot of conflict, and every stitch of deceit was used by God to bring about His perfect will. Jacob’s story shows us that God’s plans are not hindered by our failures or flaws. Using every mismatched, discarded piece of our lives, He transforms our imperfections into an intricate masterpiece, as only He can.

I’ve had my fair share of struggles, painful moments, and sin. There have been times when I wondered if those broken pieces of my life would ever amount to anything worthwhile. Maybe you’ve felt the same way—wondering if the pain you’ve endured or the mistakes you’ve made could possibly serve any purpose. Let me remind you, as I’ve had to remind myself countless times: Redeemed time isn’t wasted time. God doesn’t let anything go to waste, not even the hardest parts of our journey.

He’s taken my moments of doubt, my failures, and even the scars I’d rather forget, and He’s used them to shape me into the person I am today. He’s doing the same in your life. Those struggles you’re facing, the mistakes that you’ve made, and even the pain that seems unbearable—they’re not meaningless. God is at work, right now, in your life. He’s taking those pieces that seem broken, useless, or out of place and crafting something beautiful with them. He’s shaping you, molding your character, and preparing you for the incredible purposes He has in store for you.

I know it’s hard to see sometimes, but trust me—those very things you might see as flaws or failures are where God’s grace can shine brightest. So, hold on to every piece of your life, even the ones you wish you could forget, and trust them to God. He’s the Master Craftsman, and He’s creating a masterpiece in you that reflects His redemptive power, His faithfulness, and His love.

  1. Will you be doing the Joseph bible study next? I know you talked about doing James but in the end of the book it talked about diving in with Joseph as a continuation of Jacob. Just wondering, I went ahead and purchased Joseph so I could get a head start on having the material.
