My Closing Thoughts on Resilience

Last Tuesday we talked about the choice we are given to either be bitter or better in the face of adversity. As I got to thinking about that today, I was reminded of a story from Exodus Chapter 15. In this passage, we find the Israelites three days into the wilderness, tired, thirsty, and desperate for water. Their hearts sank, however, when they discovered that the well at Marah contained bitter, undrinkable water. Maybe you haven’t walked through a desert, thirsting for water, but if you’re anything like me, you’ve had the same feelings of disappointment and discouragement. Days that left a bitter taste in your mouth, times when the very thing you’ve longed for turned out to be more of a burden than a blessing.

It’s in these moments of adversity that we learn it is not the circumstance that molds us, but rather our response to it. The story continues to describe how the Lord guided Moses to a tree. When Moses threw it into the water, the water miraculously turned sweet.

There’s a profound message in this story, a foreshadowing that serves as a reminder of the transformative power of the Cross—a Cross that turns life’s bitterness into a fountain of spiritual sweetness and enduring hope.

When we face life’s bitter waters, we are given a choice. We can allow our trials to embitter us, or we can lift our gaze from the world, look to the Cross, and find the sweet, reassuring hope of salvation.

You are loved by an almighty God,
