I lost a friend last year. A sweet woman named Rita. No sickness, no symptoms, no signs were there to tell me I’d lose her. All I know is that one day she was here and the next day she was gone. I got a call from a friend of hers who lived in the same apartment block.

“Did you hear the news?” she said. “Rita passed away last night.”

I couldn’t believe it was true. How could it possibly be, when I had just spoken to her on the phone?

As I got to thinking about her today, I was reminded how quickly things change. How the people we love come and go, and how any day could be the last day we have. I’m not saying this to bring you down, I’m just saying that we need to treasure the time that we have, and make the most of our lives.

Time is precious. Are you using it well? Are you intentional about the way that you spend it? Are you wasting your days on screen time, or are you making the most of your days by loving the family and friends that you have?

Most importantly are you serving the Lord? Are you walking in light, or could it be that you’re waiting until you get older to get right with God? If so, that’s a dangerous mindset to have. We don’t know when the Lord will return for His church, it could be today, or it could be next year. All we know is that the day will spring up upon us like a thief in the night.

And so, the Bible tells us to be careful about how we’re living, and to use our time wisely by making the most of the opportunities we have. What kind of opportunities? Opportunities to reach out to others, to grow in our faith, and to share the gospel of Christ.

Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. (Ephesians 5:15-16, NIV)
