Scattered Seeds

Looking to the Bible we see the story of Joseph, where we discover lessons in forgiveness and grace. By all accounts one would expect Joseph to be angry at his brothers, and perhaps even turn them away in their time of need. After all, they betrayed Joseph, they despitefully set out to destroy him by selling him to merchants who were passing by.

And yet, Joseph forgave his brothers, he welcomed them into his home and gave them a place at his table. Not because they deserved it, but because we’re called to love as God loves.

God’s love doesn’t make sense to the ungodly. It’s foolishness to the self-righteous who think they should earn it. It goes against our desire to be recognized for what we’ve done and loved for who we are. But to the sinner who understands the depth of his sin, it’s everything.

Logic tells us that love is earned, the cross shows us that love is a gift.

And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. – Colossians 3:23-24
