The Bible clearly teaches that selfish ambition is wrong. Ambition is good and can be healthy in fact, but that little word “selfish” changes the game.

Competition can lead us to be the best we can be, or it can lead us to pride. The choice is ours, really–if our goal is to elevate ourselves above others, we’re running in vain.

Max Lucado writes, “His yardstick for measuring faithfulness is how faithful you are with your own gifts. You are not responsible for the nature of your gift. But you are responsible for how you use it.”

And so we run, using our God-given gifts to the best of our ability. We run, to fulfill God’s purpose within us.

Tilling the Soil

Read “The Parable of the Talents” found in Matthew 25:14-30. This parable is a strong reminder to use the gifts and abilities God gives us to the best of our ability.

Planting Hope

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. (Philippians 2:3-4, NIV)
