The book of Proverbs portrays wisdom as something that is to be sought after and treasured through diligent study and obedience to God’s Word. Looking at the Proverbs 31 Woman, it’s evident that she was led by wisdom and driven by a deep commitment to serve God. Her diligent work ethic, resourcefulness, and compassionate care for her family and community reflect a life grounded in wisdom and a heart devoted to God.

A Sweet Word from Karissa

This week in our video, Karissa shared the difference between wisdom and knowledge, saying, “knowledge is knowing many things, but wisdom knows how to apply that knowledge to our everyday life.” She added, “That requires a lot of diligence, and a lot of self-control.” These words resonate deeply as we see faithful women of God, using what they know about God as a guide post to safely lead and protect them.

Looking to Exodus 2:1-10, we find the inspiring story of Jochebed, the mother of Moses. In hindsight, I wish I would have included her in the book because of her great faithfulness. She was a Proverbs 31 woman who exercised remarkable wisdom and courage through the most difficult and trying of times.

Jochebed lived in a time when Pharaoh had commanded the killing of all Hebrew male infants, in the midst of this oppressive environment, her faith and wisdom shone through.

Recognizing the danger her newborn son faced, Jochebed took a courageous step. She made a basket, covered it with tar and pitch, and placed baby Moses in it. Jochebed displayed wisdom by strategically placing the basket in the reeds along the bank of the Nile, ensuring the safety of her child while keeping him hidden.

Jochebed’s wisdom extended beyond her actions. She also entrusted her son to God’s care. When Pharaoh’s daughter discovered Moses and showed compassion, Jochebed’s daughter, Miriam, stepped forward and suggested a Hebrew woman to nurse the child. By God’s providence, Jochebed became Moses’ own mother and had the opportunity to raise him for a time, teaching him about his heritage and the faith of their ancestors.

Jochebed’s story teaches us three valuable lessons:

  1. Recognizing when circumstances are beyond our control: Despite the harsh decree to kill Hebrew male infants, she took action to protect Moses, but ultimately entrusted him to God’s care. Jochebed teaches us the wisdom of recognizing when circumstances are beyond our control and trusting in God’s plan.
  2. Taking bold steps in faith: Despite the risks involved, she made the difficult decision to place Moses in the Nile, believing that God would guide his journey and protect him. Her faith and trust in God’s sovereignty inspire us to take bold steps in our own lives, relying on His guidance and provision.
  3. Obedience and perseverance: Jochebed’s story teaches us the wisdom of obedience and perseverance in the face of adversity. Despite the harsh decree, she chose to preserve her son’s life, even if it meant defying Pharaoh’s orders. Jochebed’s example encourages us to remain obedient to God’s leading and to persevere in our faith, even when faced with challenges and opposition.

This Week’s Challenge

Take time each evening to reflect on your day. Ask yourself how you have sought God’s wisdom and where you may have fallen short. Consider situations where you could have acted with more wisdom and pray for God’s guidance in those areas. Make a commitment to apply the wisdom you receive in your daily life.

Seeking wisdom is a lifelong pursuit. Remember that as you embark on this challenge. Keep an open heart and mind, allowing God to shape and mold you through His wisdom. Trust that He will provide the wisdom you need as you seek Him earnestly.
