My Closing Thoughts on Wisdom

The richness and depth of Proverbs 31:26 is about more than just words. It’s a tangible example for those who desire to walk in Christ-likeness as a Proverbs 31 Woman. It says,

She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. (NIV)

As I got to thinking about that today my sister Betty came to mind. Betty has been my go-to for wisdom over the years, on matters ranging from the seemingly simple – like how to perfectly glaze a ham – to the more complex – like navigating through the highs and lows of parenting. Her wisdom isn’t born out of a high level of education. In fact, she’s not all that book smart. When it comes to life, however, she is an undeniable wellspring of wisdom.

Do you want to know how to stop your children from fighting? Call Betty.

Need advice on motivating them to clean their rooms? Ask Betty.

Curious about why you’ve had the same strange recurring dream for the past 25 years? Ask Betty.

Wondering why your dog’s breath smells so bad and how you can fix it? Ask Betty.

I’ve asked her all of these questions, and each time, she’s provided an answer.

There’s a raw, practical beauty in her wisdom ever ready to share and encourage others around her. This is how I envision a Proverbs 31 Woman. While she might not be ‘brilliant’ in the eyes of the world, she’s invaluable to those in her circle.

Remember back to the chapter in our study guide this week. We talked about Abigail’s interaction with David in 1 Samuel Chapter 25, and how she exercised wisdom by riding out to meet him, bowing down before him, and begging for forgiveness on behalf of her husband. In doing so, she prevented a war between David’s men and her husband Nabal. We see that her wisdom was faithful as she acknowledged God’s promise to establish a lasting dynasty through David (verse 28). What we also see is that her wisdom was practical, discerning, and humble:

  1. Practical: Abigail demonstrated practical wisdom by quickly assembling and sending provisions to appease David and his men. Her actions addressed the immediate situation, preventing the escalation of conflict.
  2. Discerning: Abigail showed great discernment in understanding the seriousness of the impending danger and acting accordingly to prevent it.
  3. Humble: Abigail’s humility shone through in her interaction with David. Despite being in a position to justify her husband’s behavior or argue against David’s proposed violence, she chose to take responsibility for the situation, ask for forgiveness, and appeal to David’s better nature. This humble approach ultimately saved her household from destruction.

The best wisdom is anchored in truth, bathed in love, and led by faith. It’s not confined by how much we know; it’s about how we apply what we know. It’s not about lecturing, but about listening and learning. It’s not about knowing more than others, but understanding more about others.

As faithful women, we change, not just by wanting God’s wisdom, but also by sharing it honestly through what we say and what we do. Keep in mind, dear sisters, that how smart we are doesn’t limit how much wisdom we have to impart. James 1:5 tells us,

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. (NIV)

I wonder if Abigail had a sister. If she did, I wonder if that sister called her as much as I call mine.

You are loved by an almighty God,
