When my children give me a gift I use it. If they make me a meal, I eat it. If they buy me a sweater, I wear it… There’s a joy in giving to others, and what brings them joy, brings me joy.

I’m reminded of my sister Bonnie, who is great at receiving gifts. It seems like every gift she gets is treasured dearly. From the minute she opens the box, you sense her deep appreciation and experience her joy.

The Lord, on the other hand is the best giver. From the rising of the sun to the moment our head hits the pillow, and on through the night, He gives. We’re surrounded by love and showered with gifts from on high, but the question remains, do we delight in those gifts? Do we stop to give thanks?

Most importantly do we worship the gift or the giver?

You see, it’s one thing to receive a gift from the Lord–our talents, opportunities, families, friends… It’s another thing to express our gratitude to Him.

R. C. Sproul once said, “God doesn’t want us to just feel gratitude, but for us to show it by giving thanks to God with our lives.”

By God’s grace we still have time. Time to wisely use the gifts that we’re given. Time to respond to the grace that we walk in.
