My granddaughter celebrated her first birthday this week, which was nothing short of adorable. It was her first time opening gifts, and the first time she stuffed her little face with pink cake. Now come the mischievous years. The adventurous, curious, busy years of growing and learning and walking and talking. Now comes the fun.
If she’s anything like her mom was, she’ll be a busy little girl. Madison was adorable, but she was also curious and creative. So creative in fact that one afternoon she took a blue pen and scribbled all over our brand new upholstered white chair.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen that much scribbling in my life let alone on a piece of furniture. I had serious doubts that this stain would come out, but our warranty said they would try.
And so, within a couple of days the stain doctor came in and within a couple of minutes her artwork came out.
As I got to thinking about that tonight, I was reminded of some of the stains in my past. Some of the sins I was doubtful that God could remove. It was easy for me to accept forgiveness when it came to the little ones, but the big sins? They had me thinking and second-guessing the grace of my Lord.
Here’s the thing I had to learn in all of this. When I minimize His grace, I minimize His gift. If I say that my debt is too big, I minimize the immeasurable price that was paid for my sin.
And so, my friend if you’re in that place of doubt–if you wonder if you too can find grace, take your eyes off of your sin and set them on Christ. Look to the One Who gave up His life. Look to the One Who emptied Himself of all that He had. Look to the one who loves and cares for you deeply. Look to the cross.
