Opening my Bible to 2 Chronicles 32, I read,
After all that Hezekiah had so faithfully done, Sennacherib king of Assyria came and invaded Judah. He laid siege to the fortified cities, thinking to conquer them for himself. When Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come and that he intended to wage war against Jerusalem, he consulted with his officials and military staff about blocking off the water from the springs outside the city, and they helped him. They gathered a large group of people who blocked all the springs and the stream that flowed through the land. “Why should the kings of Assyria come and find plenty of water?” they said. Then he worked hard repairing all the broken sections of the wall and building towers on it. He built another wall outside that one and reinforced the terraces of the City of David. He also made large numbers of weapons and shields. (2 Chronicles 32:1-5)
Hezekiah wasn’t ready or willing to let the enemy win, and so he did all that he could to prepare for the fight. The Bible tells us that he gathered a group of people and together they blocked off the water that flowed through the land. They prepared the broken sections of the wall and built towers on it. They reinforced the wall around the city and built a second wall around that. They made a large number of weapons and shields.
If you’re not strong in your faith, you won’t be strong in the fight. And so, we need to prepare for tomorrow’s battle today. Holding on to the joy that flows like a river from the Spirit within. Reinforcing the walls of protection by drawing closer to God. While standing firm in our faith with every weapon we have–having done all to stand.
Therefore, put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. (Ephesians 6:13)
Charles Spurgeon writes, “Discouragements will arise like mists of the morning. Oh, that God’s Word may shine them away with the beams of the promises! Your afflictions multiply, and you will never be able to overcome impatience and distrust except by the infallible Word of God. You can bear trial, and bear it patiently, if you use this weapon to kill anxiety. You will “stand fast in the evil day”, and having done all, you will still stand, if this sword be in your hand.”
