Reading the book of Nehemiah, I turn to Chapter 1 where I see a man with a deep desire to serve God. He heard about the Israelites who returned to Jerusalem, how the gates of the city were burned and the walls broken down. He fasted, he mourned, and he prayed. He wanted to go to the Jerusalem to rebuild the walls, but it would take both courage and faith.

The Bible tells us that he was a cupbearer to the king. This wasn’t a job you could simply walk out of as service in the king’s palace was a serious matter back then. As such, Nehemiah had a decision to make, would he ignore this passionate call to serve God, or would he step out in faith and plead his case to the king?

In Chapter 2, he writes,

“I was very much afraid, but…”

Don’t you love that little word, “but?” Nehemiah was terrified, but he spoke to the king in spite of his fear. As a faithful believer, that word is a vital part of our vocabulary.

I’m afraid, but I’ll follow God’s will.

I’m standing alone, but I’ll keep standing strong.

I can’t do this, but I know that God can.

They might ridicule me, but I’m choosing to follow the Lord.

I don’t know where my next paycheque will come from, but I am trusting that God will provide.

I’m afraid to speak to my boss, but I know God is with me.

I’m worried about my kids, but I’ll leave them in God’s capable hands.

My problem is big, but my God is bigger.

I’ve lost someone dear, but I’ll see them again.

That thing you’re worried about tomorrow, that problem you’re anxious about today… it’s all safe in His hands. In fact, it was written down in His book before you were born.

We need to remind ourselves, and keep reminding ourselves, that the hand of God is upon us. If He calls us to it, He’ll see us through it. Just as God went before Nehemiah to soften hearts and to pave the way, He’s goes before you and I.

Planting Hope

The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” (Deuteronomy 31:8, NIV)
