Every Fall I feel the same way. I hate to say it, but I get a little blue when I see the grass fading and the leaves fall. Oh, I know they’re pretty and all a part of God’s plan, and yet I long for the return of lilacs and the warmth of sunlight on my face.
I know it’s not a popular idea. Most of my friends love Autumn, they love the snow, and would probably choose pumpkin spice lattes over scented lilacs any day of the week. But that’s not me, and I wish that it was.
With that, I got thinking today that maybe there’s something I need to learn from all this. Maybe I need to look outside my back door. Look a little bit closer at the trees in the yard and their leaves on the ground. Maybe there’s something to learn from them about letting go and holding on.
Ecclesiastes 3:6 tells me that there’s, “A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away.” (KJV)
Every Fall, without question trees, are transformed as they surrender themselves to the Lord. The colors are vibrant, the hues are intense. Like an open hand releasing its grip, they let go of their leaves and let God have His way. They don’t hold onto Summer fearing it might not return. They don’t rush into winter before it’s too soon. They simply have faith in His plan.
And so may we learn from the tree to loosen our grip, surrender our will, and simply have faith in His plan.
Let the Lord have His way
In your life every day,
There’s no rest, there’s no peace
Until the Lord has His way.
Place your life in His hands,
Rest secure in His plan;
Let the Lord, let the Lord
Have His way.
