Back in the day my dad used to say, “If you’re waiting until you can afford to get married, you’ll be waiting for years.”
Looking back at it now, I see what he meant. Michael and I could barely afford groceries, never mind all of the extras that came with running a home. And then there were kids, and a car, and a mortgage to fund, but somehow we made it, and by God’s grace we got by.
As I got to thinking about that today, I was reminded of the many ways God calls us to serve, and the countless excuses that keep holding us back.
Certainly there’s a time to plant and a time to sow, a time to step out and a time to be still, but the question is, are you waiting on God or is He waiting on you?
Too often we put off our mission, until the timing feels right. From our comfy spot on the sofa, we wait for a knock on the door, a big cheque to arrive, or a way to free up some time, instead of taking that first step of faith.
With that, I’m reminded of Joseph–a man on a mission where ever he went. Whether he was in prison or alone in a pit, he allowed God to move in his life and to use him.
I look at the Bible and I see God using people right where they are. Mordecai sitting at the king’s gate day after day. Rahab a prostitute in Jericho. Ruth a widow with no home of her own. Mary a young virgin. James and John two fishermen out on the lake.
You don’t need much to serve God, in fact, the Bible says, “He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much…” (Luke 16:10, KJV)
In other words, if all that you have are two hands, be faithful with the hands that you have. If all that you have is love, be faithful with the love that you give. If all that you have is a pocket of change, be faithful with the money you have. If all that you have is time, be faithful with the time that you have.
Start each day by asking yourself, “What do I have, and how can I use it to serve?”
Use every opportunity to draw others to Christ, as you give, and you serve, and you love.
