In 1 Samuel 30 we read a story about David and 400 of his men who went out to fight the Amalekites, while 200 of them stayed behind. The Bible tells us that David recovered everything the Amalekites had taken from Judah, including his two wives. After returning with the spoils of war, some of the men selfishly assumed they wouldn’t be sharing, but David rebuked them saying, “The share of the man who stayed with the supplies is to be the same as that of him who went down to the battle. All will share alike.”

Sometimes God says to one, “You’re going to go out to battle.” To another, He says, “You’re going to stay back, and I’ll use you right where you are.”

It’s a reminder to all of us that some of the best soldiers are working behind the scenes.

Ecclesiastes 9:10 says, “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might.” (NIV)

As I look at the Bible and I see God using people right where they are. Mordecai sitting at the king’s gate day after day. Nehemiah, the king’s cupbearer. Ruth a widow with no home of her own. Jael, a woman who assassinated the commander of the Canaanite army from inside her tent, James and John two fishermen out on the lake. As you look closer at this list, you start to notice that these are average people just like you and I. What makes them stand out, however, is that they trusted God in spite of their fear.

You don’t need much to serve God, you just need to be willing to answer His call. If all that you have are two hands, be faithful with the hands that you have. If all you have is a door, open it wide. If all that you have is a pocket of change, be willing to give. When and if He calls you to step out of your comfort zone, step up and courageously follow your faith.
