A Journey Through James Chapter 5

Trust in His Timing

I’m the creative type. Whether it’s making dolls, sewing a quilt, assembling a dollhouse, or Bible journaling, I’m knee-deep in craft supplies, and I’m loving every minute of it. I used to be the kind of person who gave up the moment I hit a roadblock, but recently, I’ve been more determined to see my projects through. The key for me has been to “trust the process.” I’ve also learned that most projects look messy before they start to come together. For example, I’ve painted a few faces over the years, and I’ve come to realize that the base layer—often a shade of orange—can look downright awful at first. But here’s the thing: as you continue to work, adding highlights, shadows, and details, the face gradually comes to life. It’s a reminder to practice patience, hold onto persistence, and trust that the process will carry you through.

In much the same way, James encourages us to trust in the process when he writes, “Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near.” (James 5:7-8, NIV)

The promise that “the Lord’s coming is near” is a firm foundation upon which we build hope. Knowing that we’re just passing through gives us a different perspective on life. It reminds us that, no matter what we face, He’s coming back to make things right. The journey may feel long on some days, but we can be sure that God is at work. Even if you can’t see the final picture yet, trust the process—His timing is perfect, and everything will come to pass in its time.

In this fast-paced world of two-minute meals, one-hour photos, and one-day deliveries, we’ve become accustomed to getting everything that we want and getting it now. But here’s the thing: whether we’re raising children, building our marriage, or simply managing the day-to-day grind, the best things in life take patience and time. And so, as we’re doing our part, we can trust that God will do His.

James says, “What the Lord finally brought about.” (v.11) When you stop to think about that, it’s clear that God’s plans take time to unfold. The restoration of a large family, like Job’s, would take years—children aren’t born and raised overnight. Likewise, rebuilding Job’s wealth and livestock would require seasons of hard work and growth. Job’s story reminds us that God’s plans can take time, and so we must be patient as we wait on His perfect timing. While we may not see the results immediately, we can trust that God is at work in our lives.

And so, if you are praying for your marriage, if you are praying for your prodigal son or daughter, if you’re praying for light in a season of darkness, don’t lose hope. God’s hand is not rushed by impatience. Trust in His faithfulness, keep praying, and remember that some of the greatest blessings have come after seasons of waiting. Keep your eyes on Him, knowing that He is working all things together for your good in His perfect time.
