My Closing Thoughts on Selflessness

The other day, I came across an incredible video that beautifully captures the essence of selflessness and reminds us of the timeless wisdom found in Scripture. It was a race that took place on December 2, 2012, known as the Burlada Cross Country Race in Spain. This race stands out because of an extraordinary act of selflessness displayed by one of the athletes, Ivan Fernandez.

As Ivan was nearing the end of the race, he noticed his fellow competitor, Abel Mutai from Kenya, slowing down and checking his watch just a few steps away from the finish line. This was Ivan’s moment to seize the opportunity, to overtake Abel and secure the victory for himself. However, instead of capitalizing on this situation, Ivan demonstrated what true selflessness looks like.

With a heart that understood the value of loving your neighbor as yourself, Ivan made a choice that rose above personal ambition. He recognized that Abel was the faster runner and that if not for his confusion, Abel would have already won. In that moment, Ivan decided to take the road less traveled, one paved with goodness and grace.

In the video, we witness Ivan slowing down and pointing ahead, urging Abel to continue. Despite the language barrier, Ivan’s intent is unmistakable. Without hesitation, he places a hand on Abel’s back, pushing him forward and guiding him through the finish line.

When asked about the race, Ivan questioned, “What would be the merit of this victory, and what would my mother think of it?”

Similarly, we should ask ourselves, “What is the merit of our victory, and what would our Father think of it?” We’re striving for the Master, but if we’re not slowing down to care for the needs of others, we’re running in vain.

The Proverbs 31 woman encapsulates the spirit of the race beautifully. Her selfless dedication to caring for others challenges us to look beyond our own needs and desires, to consider the needs of others. Her example, like Ivan’s, serves as a reminder that true fulfillment and joy are found in acts of compassion and service. Ultimately, selflessness brings immeasurable joy to those that we serve, but most importantly, it brings glory to God.

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. (Philippians 2:3-4)

You are loved by an almighty God,
