Integrity Still Matters Today
The walls were finished. The doors were in place. It was time for Nehemiah to choose men he could trust. Men who could lead Jerusalem with wisdom and strength. The Bible tells us that he appointed his brother Hanani, and alongside him, Hananiah—the commander of the citadel. Not because they had impressive credentials, but because “he was a man of integrity and feared God more than most people do.” (Nehemiah 7:2, NIV)
That one line speaks volumes, doesn’t it? God honors integrity. He values the kind of person who does what’s right, even when it’s hard. Someone who isn’t swayed by pressure, popularity, or convenience.
Integrity isn’t just about telling the truth—it’s about being the same person in private as you are in public. It’s holding to your convictions when no one is watching. It’s faithfulness, honesty, and quiet courage all working together.
Now, I’m guessing most of us aren’t in charge of leading a nation like Hanani and Hananiah were. But maybe you’re raising kids, running a household, managing a team at work, serving in your church, or simply trying to live out your faith in quiet, everyday ways.
Wherever God has placed you, integrity matters just as much today as it did back then in Jerusalem.
Why? Because integrity is what keeps you grounded when life gets noisy.
It’s what helps you walk in truth when the rest of the world takes a shortcut.
It gives weight to your words and trust to your relationships.
And most importantly, it honors the God that you serve.
Here are four simple but powerful ways integrity shows up in our lives:
1. Integrity chooses faithfulness over image.
It’s easy to get caught up in appearances—what others think, how we come across, or whether we’re being noticed. But integrity isn’t about being seen; it’s about being faithful. It’s doing what’s right even when no one’s clapping for you.
2. Integrity keeps your “yes” meaningful.
In a world full of empty promises and half-hearted commitments, integrity shows up in follow-through. It means doing what you said you would do—even when it’s inconvenient, even when no one would blame you for backing out.
3. Integrity shows up in the small things.
It’s not just about big, life-changing moments. Integrity is built in the everyday—telling the truth, showing up on time, keeping your word, being kind when it’s easier to be short. These small choices shape who we’re becoming. And that brings us to the next point…
4. Integrity reflects the heart of Christ.
Jesus didn’t waver. He didn’t compromise truth for popularity or comfort. When we walk in integrity, we reflect His character. We become trustworthy lights in a world that desperately needs truth and grace.
