Not Here. Not Now. This Belongs to the Lord

As we come to the end of our study this week, we’re turning the final page of Nehemiah—and what a journey it’s been. Can you believe it’s been three months already?

We’ve seen the Israelites rise from the ruins, rally together, rebuild the wall, and recommit their lives to the Lord. We’ve watched their spiritual growth unfold as they worshipped, confessed, repented, and stood their ground against opposition. For a while, it seemed like they were finally getting it right.

But then—chapter 13 happens.

And just like that, compromise creeps in, unpacks its bags, and makes itself at home.

What went wrong? Their guard dropped. Their passion waned. And little by little, they let the enemy back in. Isn’t that just like us sometimes? We have a spiritual high—maybe after a conference, a good Sunday sermon, or a sweet time in the Word—and then slowly, the fire flickers and fades.

That’s why Paul gives this firm reminder:

“So, if you think you are standing firm,
be careful that you don’t fall!”

–1 Corinthians 10:12 (NIV)

Paul understood the danger of complacency. The moment we think we’re untouchable—that we’ve got this faith thing figured out—is often the moment we’re most vulnerable. We can’t afford to coast. Not in a world full of distractions, temptations, and subtle compromises.

Nehemiah knew that too. That’s why he acted swiftly and firmly when he saw the people drifting again.

Consider these words:

“When evening shadows fell on the gates of Jerusalem before the Sabbath, I ordered the doors to be shut and not opened until the Sabbath was over. I stationed some of my own men at the gates so that no load could be brought in… But I warned them and said, ‘Why do you spend the night by the wall? If you do this again, I will arrest you.’ From that time on they no longer came on the Sabbath.” –Nehemiah 13:19–21 (NIV)

There’s so much packed into those verses. Here are a few things that stood out to me—and maybe they’ll speak to you too:

Temptation Lurks Near the Wall

Even though the gates were closed, the merchants didn’t leave. They lingered outside the wall, hoping to slip in and do business. That’s exactly how temptation works in our lives. Just because you’ve shut the door doesn’t mean the enemy isn’t waiting to pounce. Genesis 4:7 says,

“Sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.”
That image reminds us that we need to be watchful—not just once, but constantly.

Half-Measures Aren’t Enough

Nehemiah didn’t just shut the gates—he posted guards and gave warnings. He took it seriously. And we need that kind of resolve too. Sometimes, just avoiding temptation isn’t enough. Sometimes we have to take a hard stand, draw a line, and say, “Not today.” Faithfulness calls for action.

Guard What God Calls Holy

The Sabbath wasn’t just a tradition—it was a command from God. But the merchants tried to treat it like any other day, a chance to turn a profit. Nehemiah wasn’t having it. He fought to protect what God had set apart. And friend, we need that same courage. Whether it’s our worship, our rest, our values, or our obedience—don’t let the world redefine what God calls holy.

The “merchants” of temptation and compromise always linger near the walls.

But like Nehemiah, we don’t have to give them room.

We have everything we need to stand guard and to protect what God has built in us.

And if the enemy does come knocking at our door? May we boldly and firmly declare, “Not here. Not now. This belongs to the Lord.”

A Note About Journaling
As you move through this study, consider keeping a personal journal nearby. It doesn’t have to be fancy—just a simple notebook where you can jot down your prayers, reflections, and anything the Lord impresses on your heart. This is your space to write freely, revisit lessons, and record your own journey of restoration.

TUESDAY

Visit TWW – Visit timewarpwife.com to read the weekly intro and find the link to this week’s video.

Read Nehemiah 13:1–3 – Notice the people’s response to God’s Word and how they separated themselves in obedience.

Journaling Prompt – Where do you feel God calling you to draw clearer boundaries between faithfulness to Him and the influence of the world?

WEDNESDAY

Read Nehemiah 13:4–9 – How does Nehemiah’s response to compromise challenge you to protect what is holy in your own life?

Share in the Group – Have you ever had to “clear out a room” in your life—removing something that didn’t belong so God could restore what is holy?

THURSDAY

Read Nehemiah 13:10–18 – Consider how Nehemiah’s words in verse 18 might challenge us when we’re tempted to return to old patterns of sin.

Journaling Prompt – Write about a time when your own spiritual fire started to fade. What helped draw you back?

FRIDAY

Read Nehemiah 13:19–31 – Notice how Nehemiah set clear boundaries to protect the Sabbath and confronted spiritual compromise.

Reflection Question – What’s one boundary you might need to put in place to guard your walk with God? Share in the group if you feel comfortable.

SATURDAY

Additional Reflection – Think about Nehemiah’s prayer, “Remember me for this also, my God”  (v. 14, 22, 31). What does this reveal about his heart and his motivation for obedience?

Journaling Prompt – Write your own short prayer, asking God to help you remain faithful and wholehearted in your devotion to Him.

SUNDAY – No assignments today. Let today be a day of spiritual renewal.

MONDAY

Wrap-Up Reflection – As we close the book of Nehemiah, what stands out to you the most from his leadership, prayers, or actions?

Final Community Share – Share one truth or lesson from Nehemiah 13 that you want to carry forward into your walk with the Lord.

This Week’s Challenge

Take a quiet moment this week to reflect on your heart like Nehemiah examined the temple. Ask God to show you if there’s anything that needs to be removed, restored, or realigned. Write down one area where you sense the need for renewal, and then take one small, intentional step in obedience.
