Washing With Water Through the Word
Have you ever stopped to think that the worst day of your life might actually be the best thing that ever happened to you?
I know that sounds impossible when you’re in it—when your chest feels tight, your stomach drops, and you’re wondering how you’re going to make it through the next five minutes. But sometimes, the very moment you want to erase is the one God will use—a page that begins a new chapter. One He’s preparing for you.
It’s that day when your choices finally catch up with you. The day you can’t hide anymore, can’t pretend it’s “not that bad,” and can’t keep walking the same road you’ve been on.
-
-
- You’ve been gossiping, and now the person you talked about is standing in front of you asking, “Why would you say that about me?”
- You’ve been flirting online behind your spouse’s back, and now they’re holding your phone with the messages open.
- You’ve been drinking in secret, and your child just found the bottles hidden in your closet.
- You’ve been venting about your friend in a group text, and accidentally sent the message to her instead.
- You’ve been lying on your expense reports, and an auditor just showed up at your desk.
- You’ve been ignoring your bills, and now your electricity has been shut off.
- You’ve been skimming money from the till at work, and your employer just called you into a meeting with HR.
- You’ve been hiding purchases from your spouse, and now the credit card bill just came in.

It feels like rock bottom—and maybe it is—but it’s also where the mercy of God often meets us most clearly. It’s His way of saying, “I love you too much to let you drift further away.” That pit in your stomach? That ache in your soul? It’s not just guilt. It’s a holy nudge calling you back to the Lord.
Jonah knew exactly what that holy nudge felt like. For him it was more like a push off the side of a ship. God told him to go to Nineveh, and instead he went in the opposite direction. Before long, he was caught in a violent storm, tossed into the sea by terrified sailors, and swallowed by a giant fish. Talk about the lowest of lows—darkness everywhere, no escape, no control. I’m sure Jonah thought it was the end. But there, in the belly of that fish, he remembered God.
“When my life was ebbing away, I remembered you, Lord, and my prayer rose to you, to your holy temple.” (Jonah 2:7, NIV)
And that brings us to Nehemiah chapter 9, where God’s people are faced with their own wake-up call. After years of disobedience, they were confronted with the truth they had ignored for so long. God’s Word left no room for excuses, exposing the depth of their sin. And in one of the most powerful prayers in all of Scripture, they confessed their repeated rebellion. They remembered the times God allowed their enemies to overtake them, and they finally recognized His discipline for what it was—mercy.
Throughout the prayer, we see the same pattern again and again—rebellion, God’s correction, His gracious rescue. Verse 31 sums it up beautifully:
“But in your great mercy you did not put an end to them or abandon them, for you are a gracious and merciful God.” (NIV)
That’s the thing about a true wake-up call—it’s not about condemnation. It’s about restoration. God sometimes lets us feel the full weight of our choices because He knows it’s the only way we’ll finally turn toward Him. And when we do, we see what’s been true all along: life apart from Him will always lead to defeat, but life with Him is where we find hope, joy, and freedom.
I once heard someone say, “You never know God is all you need until God is all you have.” And that’s the beauty of these moments. When everything else is stripped away, what’s left is the one thing you could never lose—His mercy. His invitation. His open arms saying, “Come home.”
