Chapter 5 - The Shield of Faith

This week, we’re venturing into a crucial aspect of our spiritual armor: the Shield of Faith. The shield in ancient times was a formidable piece of a soldier’s armor, often made of wood or metal, designed to block and deflect incoming attacks. In our spiritual lives, the Shield of Faith serves a similar purpose—it’s our God-given defense against the schemes of the enemy. This shield is designed to protect us from the various traps, temptations, and attacks that Satan, the enemy, might use to harm or derail us spiritually. In other words, faith isn’t just a concept; it’s a tangible shield that God equips us with. This faith helps us recognize the enemy’s schemes for what they are and gives us the strength to resist them.

Ephesians 6:16 (NIV) tells us, “In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.”

Notice that Paul says, “In addition to all this,” emphasizing an extra precaution we need to take. The enemy has a quiver full of flaming arrows—doubt, fear, temptation, you name it. But when we lift our shield, those arrows lose their sting.

It’s not just about dodging these attacks; it’s about deflecting them entirely. Imagine the empowerment in being able to say, “Not today, Satan. My faith is stronger than your weapons of deceit.”

Our shield is more than just a defensive tool; it’s an expression of who we are in Christ. With it, we’re not just safeguarding ourselves; we’re declaring our allegiance to the King of Kings, who reigns supreme over any force against us.

This Week’s Challenge

This week, let’s engage in a practice of recognizing the “flaming arrows” that come our way. Each day, take a moment to identify a thought or feeling that threatens to pierce your peace or shake your faith. Write it down. Then, next to it, write a truth from God’s Word that serves as your Shield of Faith against that specific arrow. For instance, if the arrow is fear, your shield could be Isaiah 41:10, “So do not fear, for I am with you.” This simple exercise can help you become more aware of the arrows aimed at you and equip you with the faith to extinguish them.

In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. (Ephesians 6:16, NIV)
