Concluding Thoughts on Chapter 1 – The Enemy

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. (1 Peter 5:8-9)

If I had but one word to describe Peter, I might choose the word, “eager.” Peter was eager to serve. He was zealous for God. He’s the one that we see stepping out of the boat (Matthew 14) to walk on the water with Jesus. He’s one of the two that ran to the tomb the morning they discovered that Jesus was gone, he’s the one that swore to stand with Jesus whatever may come, and he’s the one that denied him three times.

Peter learned his lesson the hard way. He discovered that Satan is sly. He saw the subtle way he deceives, and how quickly he can attack. He came to understand first-hand that the war between the flesh and the spirit is real.

He was one of the few. A dedicated servant of God who was willing to die for his faith, yet when he was tested he fell.

Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall. (1 Corinthians 10:12, KJV)

Take heed. Stand firm. Resist steadfast in the faith. The Bible tells us that while the Spirit is willing, the flesh is weak. We might very well have the best intentions, but if our flesh is not brought under subjection to the Spirit we’ll fall again and again.

We have a warning. And Peter too had a warning.

Jesus told him, “Simon, Satan desires to sift you like wheat.”

But Peter couldn’t see it. He didn’t realize how easy it is for one to succumb to temptation, “I am ready to go with thee, both into prison and to death,” he said.

And then, just a few verses later, Jesus tells the disciples to pray lest they fall into temptation. And what did they do? They slept.

How many of us are sleeping right now? We’ve been given the warning to stand guard and to pray, but are we heeding the call? Do we realize the potential danger we’re in, or are we ignoring that fact?

Satan will do all he can to destroy us and bring us down, but he doesn’t have the power to make choices for us. He can’t steal our joy, rob us of peace, or destroy our faith unless we allow it. And so, I encourage you to stand strong, stay alert, and hold fast to your faith. Look for the joy in the simplicity of everyday life. Enjoy the moment you’re in and trust God to align things tomorrow.
