CONCLUDING THOUGHTS ON CHAPTER 1 – THE ENEMY

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.” (1 Peter 5:8-9, KJV)

If I had to choose just one word to describe Peter, it would be “eager.” Peter had an eagerness to serve and a zeal for God. He’s the disciple we see stepping out of the boat in Matthew 14, daring to walk on water towards Jesus. On the morning they found Jesus’ tomb empty, Peter was one of the two who ran to see it. He passionately vowed to stand by Jesus come what may—yet he’s also the one who denied Jesus three times.

Peter’s experience taught him valuable lessons, and they came the hard way. He learned how cunning Satan can be, how he operates subtly yet strikes swiftly. Peter came to understand, in a deeply personal manner, that the war between the flesh and the spirit is painfully real.

Peter was one of a rare kind: a devoted servant of God, ready to die for his faith. But when put to the test, he stumbled. “Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.” (1 Corinthians 10:12, KJV) Vigilance in faith isn’t just about avoiding the fall; it’s about embracing the grace that lifts us up when we do.

Take heed. Stand firm. Be unwavering in your faith. While the Spirit within us is indeed willing, our flesh is prone to weakness. Even with the best of intentions, unless we bring our flesh under the control of the Spirit, we will stumble time and time again.

Peter received a warning, just as we have. Jesus cautioned him, saying, “Simon, Satan desires to sift you like wheat.” But Peter, blinded by his own assurance, couldn’t grasp it. “I am ready to go with thee, both into prison and to death,” he declared.

Soon after, Jesus advised his disciples to pray so they wouldn’t succumb to temptation. What was their response? They slept.

How many of us are sleeping spiritually right now? We’ve been given divine warnings to be vigilant and to pray, but are we really listening? Do we comprehend the gravity of the danger that lurks, or are we merely brushing it aside?

While Satan is relentless in his mission to tear us down, he doesn’t possess the authority to make choices for us. He can’t steal our joy, rob our peace, or destroy our faith—unless we let him. Therefore, I encourage you, stand strong. Remain vigilant. Cling to your faith. Relish the joy found in the simple moments of everyday life and trust that God will set things right for tomorrow.

“Satan’s principal aim with believers is to bring their appetites and his temptations together; to get their souls into a dry, seared state, and then to strike the match and make them burn.” – Charles Spurgeon
